This striking piece by Alamwar was hand-embroidered by the Banjara, a tribal women's craft cluster near Hyderabad, India.
We fell in love with the look of this special cushion cover, designed in a clean neutral color palette yet embroidered with a variety of traditional embellishments including mirrors, beads, and cowrie shells, which were used as circulation currency in parts of India dating back to the 1800s.
Typically, Banjara embroidery features skilled stitch work in bright colors. The muted color palette of this unique piece lets the talent of the craft shine through, and would complement many different kinds of settings. We envision this versatile work of art nestled among a cluster of other well-loved pillows, as a standalone statement piece, or as the focal point of a set of our other mirrored pillows.
The Banjara tribe is a group of nomadic people that migrated across India, even predating the arrival of the Mughals! Their eye-catching traditional wear and free-spirited way of living has long served as inspiration to many designers and brands. Alamwar has made a concerted effort to understand the tribe's needs and contribute to the preservation of their crafts and activities.
Alamwar has created a special collection to involve the Banjara women and give them continuing work, and to celebrate the tribe's culture and customs. The brand intimately involves the women in their processes, inviting them to stay at their headquarters for a few days and work closely on design development. The women then take these designs back and distribute work among the whole group.
The Banjara Mirrored Ina Square Pillow is truly a beautiful piece with an even more beautiful story. Your purchase contributes to the preservation of a unique tribal art we are lucky to still have surviving today.

Variation is a part of the charm of hand-made products, telling the story and giving the mark of the creators who craft them. Due to the hand-made nature of the product, no two pillows are exactly the same.
